How To Know If You Have Degenerative Joint Disease In Your Hips

by Clifford Ramos

Degenerative joint disease is a condition in which the cartilage that lines the joint surfaces becomes damaged over time, leading to pain and stiffness. The most commonly affected joints are the hips and knee joints due to their weight-bearing nature.

To know if you have degenerative joint disease in your hips, you'll want to pay close attention to certain symptoms. These are the signs you might be dealing with this issue and need to see an orthopedist.

Your Hip Feels Stiff When You Stand Up

If you find that it's difficult to get up from a sitting position or your hip feels tight, this could be an indication of degenerative joint disease. You might also feel some swelling in one or both hips.

Your Hips Feel Painful When Moving

Pain is often one of the most obvious signs of degenerative joint disease in the hips. If you experience pain when moving your hips in any way, including bending or stretching, it's likely time to visit the doctor.

This pain might come along with a decrease in your body's range of motion. It might be difficult or painful for you to turn your hips or walk with a normal gait.

You Experience Clicking and Grinding Sounds in Your Hips

If you hear any clicking or grinding noises when you move your hips, this could be a sign of degenerative joint disease. This noise is caused by the bones rubbing together without the cushioning protection of the cartilage.

You Struggle to Sleep Due to Hip Pain

If you find yourself unable to sleep at night because of hip pain, this is another indication that degenerative joint disease might be the cause. This pain might feel like a dull ache or sharp pain that makes it difficult to stay comfortable in bed.

You've Tried to Stretch But Pain Persists

Many doctors recommend exercise and stretching to help relieve some body pains. If you've tried stretching to alleviate your hip pain but find that the pain persists or worsens, this could be another sign of degenerative joint disease.

Schedule an Appointment With an Orthopedic Specialist

If you experience any of the above symptoms, it's time to see an orthopedist. They will be able to examine your hips and diagnose the cause of your joint pain.

Once a diagnosis is made, they will be able to provide you with appropriate treatment options and help to prevent your condition from growing worse. For more information on orthopedic services, contact a professional near you.

About Me

Powerful Physical Therapy

I was badly injured a year ago, and it took a long time to get back to my normal level of ability. One of the things that helped more than anything was the time that I spent in physical therapy. I didn’t always love going to physical therapy – in fact, sometimes, I really didn’t enjoy it at all. But ultimately, the therapists and other patients I worked with helped inspire me to get better, and the exercises facilitated my healing process. I started this blog to talk about all of the things I learned about physical therapy and healing during my recovery time. I hope my blog reaches other accident victims. I want to offer encouragement, hope, and information for people who are in the same boat that I was in.
